Bowood Coach Trip Report

Bowood Trip Report

Our summer trip this year, on Sunday 6th July, was to Bowood House and gardens in Gloucestershire.  The house and gardens are set within 100 acres of `Capability` Brown parkland , beautifully landscaped. 2025 marks 50 years since the house and gardens were opened to the public with an exhibition of objects, photographs and recollections of the Bowood community.

Bowood is the home of the Lansdowne family and boasts stunning Georgian architecture, fine art, fascinating historical artefacts, and beautifully restored state rooms. Bowood is also where Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in his on-site laboratory.

This year is the first time the walled garden has been open to the public. Located behind towering walls, this four acre secret garden is centred around the environment and the protection of nature. It offers an oasis of splendour and an escape from the everyday. The flower beds have been meticulously designed and showcase seasonal blooms in beautiful displays. There are several greenhouses with extraordinary plants, and a sensory garden.

The Italianate Terrace Garden offers stunning panoramic views of the parkland, brimming with vibrant flowers and delicate water features. We also wandered to the Doric Temple, the cascade, and Hermit`s cave – each with its own story and charm.  The arboretum provides visitors with an all year round spectacle with some rare trees, and is a place to breathe in the fresh air and spot local wildlife.

The terrace gift shop offers locally sourced food products and a selection of beautiful home-ware, Bowood souvenirs and a selection of books. Refreshments are also available from the café or restaurant.

Thankyou to everyone who came with us on the trip, and also to Pencoed Travel and Dave, our regular driver, who always looks after us so well!

Our next trip is to the Malvern Autumn Show on Sunday 28th September. There are still spaces available, please contact Elizabeth on 07786 846825 for more details.
